Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
