Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
